We are moving!

I have been trying to keep my enthusiasm down about something for WAY too long. I just didn't want to let my workplace know unnecessarily (because you never know what can happen between looking for a job and an accepted offer). I put in my two-weeks notice today, so the word is out.

1. Job stuff.
I have accepted an offer from a company located in Cincinnati (Montgomery, specifically). After interviewing many places across many months, this was the place that I was most impressed with, both workplace-wise and product-wise. Other places were good, but this clicked really well with my idea of where I want to work. Because I had been most serious about working there, I had spent a lot of time looking at their work and it is quite innovative and exciting.

Leaving Maritz is bittersweet. There were times that I enjoyed work (especially recently) and there were times that were bumpy. I learned a lot there and I truly appreciate that. I really hate to leave the friends I have made there. As an automotive research company, it is definitely in for some hard times, though I know it will pull through them well. The problems of the automakers does make the decision a bit easier. It is not likely to be a growth area for a while and, thus, not somewhere that I want to invest my post-graduate career. Mostly, I am excited by the fit. I never felt like I fit very well at Maritz. It is hard to say why, but I guess it seemed more "traditional" than where I envisioned myself to land after finishing my degree. The new company has a far less traditional feel.

2. Family moving stuff.
We are selling our house and leaving Perrysburg. I hate to do it. The hardest thing is dealing with the fact that the kids will no longer be so close to my half of the family. It was beautiful for my parents, brother, and grandmother to all be within a mile or two of our house. Anne loses her flute student base (thin now, but there) and the flute choir she directed will be out a director. I lose two great mens groups that meet weekly (a smaller version of one even meets twice a week).
We decided that career growth and stability were also important, and that this simply is not available in Toledo, but is ample in Cincinnati.
The good side is that Anne's folks will be 3 hours closer, but that still doesn't make up for the fact that we cannot drop the kids off at a moment's notice or drop by for dinner when we are flaking out.
Our house is nearly ready for market. We have mixed feelings about it. We have worked really really really hard on it for 3 years and there will definitely not be the traditional financial consequence for it in this market. Our fixer-upper is now all fixed-up. We don't want to look backward pathologically, but we do want to have the funds we will need to buy something when we land in Cinci. Luckily, we got in cheaply and can sell it (as opposed to those who purchased homes at the height of the bubble and have too much negative equity to sell).

[Side note: Thank goodness for Craigslist and storage units. The house is presentable and we have ruthlessly purged a lot of our unused stuff and stored the rest.]

Our plan is: I stay with Casey and Jannelle (they are really gracious and live only 10 minutes from Montgomery) until I find a rental that allows Anne and the kids to move down. We will then scout out a suitable house and hope that our place in Perrysburg has sold by then. Of course, any new house purchase hinges upon selling our present one. We are very excited to get on with our new life in Cincinnati. It seems sort of adventurous, really.

3. Kid stuff.
They are lovely. I am very proud of both of them. Joel is amazing. He can do anything he wants to do. He has made a transition from toddler into "little kid." Asher is displaying the precursors to crawling. He scoots/rolls well and can almost get onto his hands and knees without help (and can with minimal help). Anne and I are in love with these two more than we ever could have imagined. I am glad we can get this move done before they get into school and get a lot of friends.

Kids and autumn

Long time, no update. I know.
Well, things have been ticking along busily. Asher and Joel are really happy and, beyond some issues with getting to sleep, they could not be better. Joel likes being around Asher a lot.
After reading a book about big and little brothers I asked, "Joel, you are Asher's BIG brother, what does that make Asher?" Joel smiles and replies, "Happy!"
Asher has that smile that only a 4-month-old can have...that "I see it, I can grab it, and I can shove it into my mouth" kind of look. He likes the laundry basket a lot.

I love that it feels like fall. We are addicted to farmers markets, especially the downtown Toledo one. I really really like it. Our cherry tomatoes are crazy huge and we are pulling off a dozen or more a day. We got our house all ready on the outside for fall. I even put down some nice new mulch. The new car is running really well (I am still amazed at this fact). I don't know what to do with the old red one. Maybe I should sell it, maybe not. I wish I knew someone who wants a great autocross setup.

Joel is great on his tricycle. Seeing him develop that skill was inspiring enough that I got a unicycle (an old Schwinn 24" from craigslist) and, after one week, I can go between 1 and 50 feet per mount (the 50 feet was a one-timer). Yes, I know it is goofy and pointless...but it is a huge challenge for the motor cortex and it is surprisingly good exercise.

I love this sequence of pictures. Nah, they aren't related.
