Hint1: I took this picture in a metro Atlanta Target store just after Xmas. Hint2: We got the answer from a "check the price yo' self" scanner, but we didn't believe the answer the scanner gave.
The red stuff is a thick plastic that appears to be permanent. There is no wrapping--this the final form in which it should be used. The top and bottom of the item are identical (both have the heavy plastic).
maybe you put baby carrots in it to wash them and eat from it. You know... the top plastic thingy detaches and you fill it with carrots(or any other small foods needing washing)put the top back in and rinse.
Or, what if the spring has a specific resistance, and this acts as some sort of portion scale. You put your food on it, and you know that it's a pound of food cause the thing compresses all the way.( not a very practicle idea)
Are you in the place where you found it (in the pic)? It definitely looks aimed at kids and like some kind of container. Going with the laying it on the side theme, I guess it could be a picture holder of sorts. Or maybe, going with the produce theme, it's some funky sort of garlic crusher. Is anyone even close? The suspense it killing me here! Time for hint #3???
Hints: -The top and bottom do not detach. Because the top and bottom surfaces are roundish (though chunky), I doubt it is to be used on its side (though I could be wrong about this). -It was in the clearance section near the front door (it was just after xmas, though it is not an xmas item). -It was too small for a soda can to fit inside it.
Shall I assume that everyone who was going to guess has already guessed?
Hint 2.1: It makes very little sense to be used for what it was labeled as. Hint 2.2: It is one of the guesses that Sal had made...but he envisioned it incorrectly.

Is that red stuff just the wrapping? If the top and bottom were lined up I would say you could sit it on its side and put mail in it.
I say it's a pen and pencil holder. Although with no bottom it would get marks all over your desk.
I could also see it as a kitschy "pop cozy". But again with no bottom it's not a very good one.
Since you didn't buy it I'm guessing it's not very good at whatever it does.

Hi Neil!
Interesting....Sal guessed the exact same three things I was going to guess. *Twilight Zone theme*

It is used to build up biceps. I think Spiderman purchased it at Target.

For the answer, check the filename of the picture. :)
We never figured out why this would be a good design for holding pencils, though...
